Owned by the City and County of Denver and operated by Waste Management, the 507-acre Lowry Landfill site is located near the intersection of Quincy Avenue and Gun Club Road in Arapahoe County, 15 miles southeast of downtown Denver. It was declared a Superfund site and listed on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s National Priorities List in 1984 due to soil and groundwater contamination that resulted from landfill operations there in the previous two decades. Since that time, regulatory agencies, local governments and private entities have been investigating and addressing environmental contamination on the site.
