Denver built an onsite water treatment plant at Lowry Landfill in 1984 and replaced it with a new plant in 2000. Further upgraded in 2004, it now treats approximately 1.5 million gallons of contaminated groundwater every month. Collected from various areas of the site, the contaminated groundwater is treated to a level safe for discharge into the municipal sewer system. From there, the discharged water eventually reaches the Metro Wastewater Reclamation District and Aurora’s offsite wastewater treatment facilities, where it is treated further.
